The Last Story

The Last Story - Mistwalker na Wii
Zwać się ma The Last Story.

Co wiadomo o projekcie? Praktycznie nic.

Sakaguchi focuses solely on The Last Story
"At present, I'm focused on this one game. It's my only project. It will be raised strongly, beautifully, and gently." - Mistwalker CEO Hironobu Sakaguchi

Weirdness of the Day - Sakaguchi wants The Last Story to bloom like a flower
Apparently Hironobu Sakaguchi is a big fan of flowers, Camellias especially. Sakaguchi is so fond of them that he planted some Camellias for himself, and one flower that wasn't positioned very well actually blossomed. What does this have to do with The Lsat Story?

"I don't really do fortune-telling and I am not superstitious, but at this moment I thought 'I want The Last Story to bloom like this as well." - Hironobu Sakaguchi

One would hope that the game will do well, as Mr. Sakaguchi seems particularly proud of it.

"It’s almost complete and has my full satisfaction."

Latest Last Story blog post makes mention of mystery Mr. M.
Joining Sakaguchi's latest photography work, the latest post at the Mistwalker blog makes a few vague references to Sakaguchi's latest project, The Last Story.

Apparently, at around 21:00 Japan time yesterday, Sakaguchi was chatting with a Mr. M. on the development staff. The conversation centered around the latter areas of the game, a moment of "quiet" or "stillness" during the battles. They began speaking about the game's magic growth system, and continued to speak until they'd reached the user interface and control aspects of that system.

They debated deeply on issues, a process that Sakaguchi found fun. He was driven to think to himself that he likes making games. He also noted that he and Mr. M. make a perfect match. They're able to speak heatedly while keeping a calm side. He remarked that he thanks Mr. M. for his enthusiasm, and added that he bows his head to the zeal of the entire staff. This is what gives life to The Last Story.

I have to admit that it can be quite difficult sometimes to figure out what Sakaguchi's blog says without knowing what Sakaguchi is trying to say in the first place. Mistwalker's official translator (or perhaps it's Sakaguchi himself?) shouldn't have that problem, so I'd suggest waiting for an official English version of this post to appear at the site within the next couple of days if you want to see what Sakaguchi is really talking about in this post.

Just think, once March comes around, we'll be getting an actual development blog at the Last Story official site.

Hironobu Sakaguchi's latest The Last Story blog post - literal translation
This is the same blog post from Sakaguchi that we talked about yesterday...the one that mentioned the mysterious 'Mr. M.'. We summarized the info, but now you can get a more literal translation of what Sakaguchi said. As you already know, this pertains to The Last Story.

“We started to talk about the moment of ‘stillness’ in the battle near the final stage of the game. Starting from the growth of the magic and also about the U.I. operation. I’d like to incorporate an elaborated element, but I don’t want to slow down the tempo of the game… We discussed it quite intensely. I’m not sure if this is the right word, but it was ‘fun’.”

The Last Story To Have Realtime Battle System?
While he isn’t supposed to “officially” say anything about the game until — presumably — Nintendo give the green light, The Last Story director Hironobu Sakaguchi likes sneaking a few hints into his Mistwalker blog posts about his day-to-day activities, regardless. For instance, he may have just given away that the game’s battle system will be in realtime:
Production of the last story is advancing smoothly. But, I want you to understand how difficult it is to finish the last fixes and it is time consuming in RPG creation. There is an unknown territory for me because of the real time system exists in it. But I believe that the hurdle will invent something new. Of course, it’s possible to finish it really quick, but the effort we put in in 2 years would be wasted. The final seasoning is very important. So I made up my mind carefully and I’m working with scrupulous attention. Anyway the sense of security is necessary to the foundation so that you can enjoy yourself without any logic.

The Last Story - new art, details
Ruli Island is located in the entrance of the only open bay of the continent surrounded by the mountains. The place is gathered by wealth and power because of the linchpin of traffic and defense of the empire behind it. A huge battery is enshrined, skilled knights and reckless mercenary soldiers prepare for the enemy's invasion. At the wealthy town of Ruli's, the enquettish(?) voice is like intoxicated from the (???) party wraps around everything, despite the ground of entire empire being covered by corruption, while the neighboring castle is filled by a weird ghostly air with an eerie magical power. Tonight as well, an evil spirit is lurking nearby, like it may be attracted to Ruli's strange power.

The Last Story - 'knights and mercenaries' art, details
- two classes of soldiers: "knights" and "mercenaries"
- Knights are at the high ranks of society
- Knights worry about nothing but mastering their skills
- Mercenaries are treated like "disposable units"
- they wander in search of work
- Mercenaries are the main characters
- Mercenaries "have dreams of becoming knights, but fight on the boundaries of death as mercenaries."
- Mercenaries know sadness of losing loved ones, having their villages burned down, and having all their possessions stolen
- Mercenaries want power in order to protect the ones they love
- "'Extreme Power' is poured onto those who harbor 'sadness and loneliness' ... however, they must not make mistakes in how it is used."
- Mercenaries are detested because they always fight
- Knights are a symbol of authority
- People respect Knights as friends of justice

The Last Story - more details
- director wanted to create the feeling of actually being in Ruli City
- reactions of people in the city will change
- things fly by in the wind
- there will also be "desperate escapes"
- "Prior to creating the city, we visited small towns in France and Italy. It was for research. Of course, it's a fantasy virtual world, so there's no need to make it match reality. However, by incorporating architectural designs that were made to support life over a long history, we will be able to build a convincing world."
- Ruli City is the base for your adventures
- "the city of The Last Story is expansive, and if you walk a good amount, you'll probably get lost. There are few dead ends, and a large number of narrow roadways. There's a reason for this type of setting. Please, walk around Ruli City aimlessly to experience that reason."

The Last Story - new details (water, sound and vehicle talk)
sea travel hinted at
- "Within the world of computer graphics, the feeling of water is remarkably beautiful."
- water examples within the game: a waterfall in a cave, a large river in the center of town, and "the seas upon which the main characters head out."
- "I believe we're progressing well with sound effect production. We placed importance on it from the start, and while it is out of the ordinary from a scheduling standpoint, we started sound development simultaneous with the start of production. In the 'world,' there exists 'sound' that has been running in parallel for a long time. The influence of this will pull the gameplay and cinematics in good directions, I believe. 'Water' and 'Sound' -- from the supporting role to the main roles."
- Ruli has canals that effect the lives of people
- "The canals lead to the sea, and the sea teaches people that in order to head out on adventure, they need ships."
- "The world in an island will expand with the use of ships. Vehicles in a fantasy world are an important tool for getting you excited."

Sakaguchi defends The Last Story, says it's not a Final Fantasy rehash, reveals more development details
Here's a somewhat complicated story to follow. This includes Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Final Fantasy Gaiden director Takashi Tokida, and a random comment from a gamer. All of this took place on Twitter.

- Sakaguchi sent a tweet to Tokida that said, "How about stopping with the Final Fantasy rehashes?"
- This was probably said as a joke, and the banter between the two devs continued for some time.
- As this was all taking place on Twitter, a random gamer sent a tweet to Sakaguchi that said, "From the title, Last Story gives the feeling of being a big FF rehash."
- Sakaguchi responded to this comment, but the response was removed...but not before someone got a screen-grab
- Sakaguchi's response was, "I think you'll feel this once you've tried it. LS is not a rehash."

Well now that that drama is over, we can get to some of the other Sakaguchi tweets about The Last Story.

- (concerning music) "I'm sorry, I can't reveal the composer yet. We had one person do all the songs."
- (discussing development of The Last Story) "The weather doesn't clear up, but my heart is clearing up. This is because I shut myself up with the development team every day and am able to feel The Last Story being born. It's finally off from the creator's hands and has begun to move on its own -- like always. It's like a living creature. It breaths on its own, it speaks on its own. It's fascinating, even though its spirit is digital data."

Visit the Star Viewing Tower at The Last Story Blog
Nintendo continues to intrigue with high level world details.
Nintendo seems to be picking up the pace with The Last Story developer blog updates. And the posts could be getting a bit more specific.

Following a post earlier this week about water elements and sound effects, a post titled "Hoshimi no Tou" hit the blog today.

Hoshimi no Tou, literally "Star Viewing Tower," is an actual location in the world of The Last Story. Write's the game's producer, on The Last Story's primary setting of Ruli Island, Hoshimi no Tou is a tower from which the stars appear more beautiful. People look up at the stars from this tower, point to their guardian star, and speak.

The game's director describes one particular meeting at the tower. Two characters meet and speak about their dreams. "In this place that's sacred to the Arganan Family, their hearts touch for just a moment."

"The girl" whistles a song whose words she's forgotten, writes the director, a melody about people torn apart that has been handed down in her family.

Both characters lost their parents in their youth, but were able to survive even when surrounded by wars and power struggles. They both have difficult memories, but with time these memories turn into kindness.

"Everyone has a place that is special to them," writes the producer to close off the blog post. "For 'her,' this Hoshimi no Tou appears to be an extremely important place."

So who is the mystery girl, and who is the person she's with at the tower?
